New: RIP SGT. 1st CLASS ADRIAN ELIZALDE

On August 23rd, US Army Sgt. 1st Class Adrian M. Elizalde was killed by an improvised explosive device while serving a tour of duty in Iraq.

I never met the man, but I feel compelled to make mention of his death because during the past few months I have come to consider his girlfriend, bodogFIGHT women's 135 pound champion Tara Larosa, a force to be reckoned with.

Sgt. Elizalde must have been one of the manliest men ever to walk the face of the earth, not only for having had what it takes to become a Green Beret and serve his country, but also for having been able to tame (or at least control) the greatest female fighter on the planet.

Sgt. Elizalde, if there truly is a reward waiting for the worthy after life is over, then you surely rank amongst the most deserving of it. On behalf of everyone who gets to enjoy an easy life because of people like you, I want to say thank you. Thank you very, very much.

Bas steps down as a coach for the Anacondas!

We asked Bas about him stepping down and becoming the “Face of the IFL”.

It has been not that easy to make the decision.
I said in the beginning that I wanted to do both jobs, but we soon realized that it would be a “conflict of interest” for me of course. If I do all the interviews with all the other fighters and still coach the Anacondas, I can truly understand that other coaches are going to complain, I would do it if I was one of them.

So to avoid all that, I realized that I had to focus only on the new job and that means, leave the other one.
Now, I came to the US to try to entertain the people over here, I have done this my whole life and I truly think that this is the purpose of my life.
So when the offer came from the IFL to be the Face of them AND to host their new show “Battleground” on My Network TV together with Tiffany Fallon, I had only one question: “In the past they always kept me on a leash, can I do it my style?”, their answer: “That’s why we want you, because we like your style”, that was a good answer that made it easy for me to make the decision.

But the real reason, that made it easy for me to make the decision, was that I had Shawn Tompkins to take over for me, I really don’t think that I wouldn’t have done this without him, and I really mean this!
Shawn Tompkins has been a trainer for SO long, it’s just insane, his life is very interesting.
Shawn and I go back a long time and he always has been teaching the "Bas Rutten System" and had great success with it. I met him like 8 years ago and he stayed at the Beverly Hills JJ Club, the Club where I was teaching at the time, and he stayed for a while. We right away “hit it off” and he liked the way I was teaching. He started to teach like that but on top of that he did what I want all my students to do, but not many actually do. He started to add things and come up with his own stuff, listen, this is the true kind of teacher, I am very happy with him, trust me!

Marc Homenick, Sam Stout, Chris Horodecki, Krzyzstof Soszynski, KOTC Champ Mack Dansing, David Louaso, Dan Henderson who just KO's Wanderlei, he also trained with Shawn like 6 weeks before that fight, the list goes on and on, they all trained with him and he made them! Now he's going to teach also Matt Lindland and Phil Baroni, so Fedor and Frank, watch out!

When you see so many people going to him, you KNOW that he is very good. He was already my coach (not assistant coach, and I mentioned this way before this all happened) for the Anacondas. My guys already trained with him many times, they all respect him a lot, so the transition was an easy one for them AND of course, for me.

Did I have trouble with leaving the Anacondas?
Oh yes I did, and it was more difficult than I thought. I had trouble sleeping, especially the day before out event at the Forum here in LA. I just couldn’t sleep, took sleeping pills (Tylenol PM) but it didn’t work, my mind was with them, I really wanted them to win and I felt like I should be there with them.
Also, I thought that I was going to be the coach ONE last time for them at the Forum, but because of production reasons, we couldn’t do it, and that was bothering me also. But the guys all knew what was going to happen, and I know that they are not only physical, but also MENTAL very strong.
So when Shawn took them to the ring and did the tremendous job that he did, wow, I was so happy, it was crazy!
I told them before the event that I really thought we could “sweep” them, just like we did to the Tokyo Sabres, but to have it actually happen, against a great team under the wing of Frank Shamrock (who’s a great coach), that was just a great feeling. It was like the Gods gave me this present!

So, I handed my jersey over to Shawn Tompkins, if you need any info on him: www.teamtompkins.com is his website, please check it out.

And the Anacondas? I told them that they can always call me with whatever question or problem they have, I will of course always help them. They really are like family to me and we had such a great time, I thank all you guys for that!!

Now, for all the people, Monday nights from 8 till 10 PM on “My Network TV” we have “Battleground” and Friday nights on “FSN” the IFL (check your local listings for time), please check it out and please keep supporting MMA!

Godspeed everybody!

Bas Rutten
